Metabolic rate is the rate at which your body burns calories. The metabolic rate is partially determined by the amount of muscle we have - more the muscle mass, higher the metabolism and vice versa. That is why men have a higher metabolic rate as compared to women. It is also dependant on age; an 18 year old will have a high metabolic rate due to more muscle-mass, compared to an 80 year old.
