Don’t go BANANAS!

We received a question in our FB Community a few weeks back and that has prompted me to write this article. The question was -

 

I am sure many of you have come across similar, if not the exact same magical diet that helps reduce weight and cleanse/detox your body. If not the diet, a whole lot of detox magical products which help clear the ‘toxins’ from your body. Sounds familiar? I am sure it does.

Well…

If you have purchased product(s) or done a ‘Detox’ diet, you have been DUPED! Why do I say so? More importantly, why believe me? After reading this, you just might.

Your body is perfectly capable of detoxifying itself, it does not need any product or an exclusive diet to do so. The main function of your liver and kidneys is to DETOX. It is when you burden these organs a lot, you decrease their efficiency to do so.

How do we end up doing that? Mainly due to:

  1. Drinking less water.
  2. Too much alcohol.
  3. Heavy reliance on processed food items.

Should you worry about detox?

Now, if you are someone who compliments a healthy lifestyle, detox is bull c*ap. Coming to the second part, somebody will argue that “but it helps me lose weight.”

Of course, it does! Any hypo-caloric diet will help you lose weight, in most cases. If it helps lose weight, it must be good. Well, not always!

The problem with these kinds of diets is they are exclusive and cut down on important macronutrients from your diet. Taking the banana diet for example, yes you may get all the goodness in abundance of what is available in bananas, but you will miss out on protein and fats. These macronutrients are essential for optimal hormonal environment and recovery.

And again, if you eat an only banana diet in a caloric surplus, you are going to gain weight! There is no escaping that.

Thus, it would be a better option to get all macronutrients in, follow a hypocaloric diet with some resistance training for better body composition rather than jumping on to these things just to drop some weight. Regarding the detox, well, leave that to your liver and kidneys!
