I have heard many people fearing cruciferous/green leafy vegetables due to presence of chemical named “Goitrogens”.

What are Goitrogens exactly?
Goitrogens are naturally occurring chemicals seen mostly in green leafy vegetables, soy , sweet potatoes etc. These are known to interfere with certain enzymes which supply iodine to our thyroid glands for their proper functioning.

The truth is…
One will have to consume a huge amount of cruciferous vegetables in order to block iodine entering the thyroid gland due to goitrogens. And more importantly, one will have to eat them raw for their goitrogenic properties. If these veggies are steamed, fermented or cooked then their goitrogenic properties gets destroyed.
Other than that a good intake of iodine and selenium through diet will contribute to proper thyroid functioning.

One should not totally avoid these vegetables as they contain Vitamins for good skin and hair health, antioxidants to neutralise free radicals , fibers to treat constipation and other micronutrients essential for proper nourishment.
