Water retention, also known as fluid retention refers to an excessive buildup of fluid in the circulatory system, body tissues, or cavities in the body.

Cut back on dehydrating drinks such as coffee, tea and alcohol. Drink more water - yes! water retention can also occur from a lack of water because your body doesn't know when it will get more water so it retains the water that it doesn't get. Women usually retain more water in their body, during menstural cycle (you might wonder why weight incresead during that time by a kilo or two!)

Cut high sodium foods out of your diet as salt absorbs water and causes water retention. Eat a healthy, balanced diet that contains a lot of vegetables, grains and other high-fiber foods. Add more cabbage, cucumber to your diet as they are natural diuretics. Avoid refined carbs in diet including processed sugar, white flour etc.

Deficiencies in protein, potassium, calcium, magnesium and vitamins B1, B5 and B6 may also lead to water retention. Exercise has been known to help control water retention .
