“I have dieted hard for six days at a stretch, did not even give in to the Saturday night party! Today is the day I reward myself. That Oreo shake at my favorite café, I AM COMING to get you.”

See yourself doing this every week, updating your Instagram over the weekend with the food adventures and the #foodgasm #cheatday#ideservedthis tags? Guess what? You are NEVER going make optimal progress this way.

Let’s take an example:

Roy is aiming for fat loss and wants to flaunt the six pack resting under that layer of fat. He LOVEEEESSS chocolates. He maintains his weight at roughly 2500 kcals a day. Now he can do either of the two things –

Plan A – Follow a daily deficit of 500 kcals, thus eating a 2000kcal diet on a regular basis. Occasionally, fit in a piece or two of chocolate into his diet (he diets smartly and is flexible) and this way, stay on the diet for long. Maintain a long-term deficit. Fast forward few weeks, hello abs! <3

Plan B – Follow a salad diet through the week with a daily deficit of say 500 calories again. He does not know this as on some days when he is extremely hungry, he eats an additional serving or two of oats and banana as they are CLEAN foods. CLEAN foods do not make you put on weight after all. After suffering for 6 days, he treats himself with three slices of deep dish pizza and an Oreo shake topped with whipped cream. That meal itself could be 3000 kcals.

This way, at the end of the week he is at a deficit of 0 calories. He steps on the scale and does not see any changes, nor do his measurements change.

What looks better in the long term here?

Eating the food that you like at times so that the cravings do not take over, staying on the plan long term and achieving your goals? Or indulging in that DESERVED cheat meal over the weekend and staying where you are?

You make the choice! ;)
